Capital City Half Marathon News: 2004 Archives
John Bingham Racing
Capital City Half Marathon founder, John "The Penguin" Bingham ran his first
marathon in Columbus in 1993. "My life changed in the moment I crossed the finish
line," said Bingham. "And I want to bring that same opportunity to others, like
Kirk and Ian." Once a 240-pound smoking, drinking, couch potato, Bingham is now the
most widely read running author in the world with a monthly column in Runner's World
magazine and four best selling books, including No Need for Speed.
"The idea of John Bingham Racing is pretty simple." Bingham says, "We
just want to bring the same joy of the healthy, active lifestyle to everyone who is willing
to take on the challenge of a long-distance event. Whether that's the Commit to be Fit 5K
or the Capital City Half Marathon, we want the participants to understand that we are
celebrating their accomplishments."

"Road races are participant events that can attract as many people as a rock
concert"
– Street and Smith's Sports Business Journal
The second running boom is continuing to explode and active adults of all ages and
shapes have learned that the greatest joy in the sport of running and walking comes not
from how fast they go or how thin they become, but from simply having the courage to take
the first step.
Foot races have developed from small intimate gatherings of elite athletes to large
gatherings of runners and spectators celebrating their inspiration, dedication and
perspiration over the past weeks, months, years or a lifetime. When the members of the
second running boom show up to an event they show up like they are going to a party.
They are coming to celebrate with the thousands like them who share their dreams, goals
and values.
"John 'The Penguin' Bingham is the new fitness guru."
